Joseph Ulmer papers, 1891-1958.

The Joseph Ulmer Papers consist of correspondence (1912-1958); records of the Pioneers of Alaska; mining and engineering reports (1917-1939); scientific and historical writings and notes; legal documents; a scrapbook of newspaper clippings (1898-1938); personal logs and diaries; employment records; photographs of family and Alaskan places (1924-1952); and maps and survey sketches of Alaska (1908-1935). Correspondence files include letters from family members, mining and engineering associates, political acquaintances, and officials of the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines (now University of Alaska Fairbanks). Records of the Pioneers of Alaska include organizational and membership records, as well as correspondence files from Ulmer's tenure as Grand President and Secretary (1918-1947). Ulmer's writings include criticism and satire written under the pseudonym "Cassiar Joe"; poetry; and articles on scientific and historical topics.

This collection records the construction of roads, trails and bridges in Alaska from approximately 1909-1959. The Alaska Road Commission was established in 1905 as a board of the U.S. War Department where it remained until 1932. Joseph Ulmer (1874-1958), a German immigrant, lived and prospected in various Alaskan communities before settling in the Circle, Alaska, region. He was an engineer on the Alaska Road Commission, an Alaska Territorial Road Commissioner, and Grand President of the Pioneers of Alaska.
